The quick answer

Most wedding receptions last about five hours, from the start of cocktail hour to the last dance. Large or multicultural Ontario weddings often run six hours or more, while small brunch or lunch receptions can be three to four hours.

  • Cocktail hour: about 60 minutes.
  • Entrances, dinner and speeches: about 2 hours.
  • Dancing and late snack: about 2 to 3 hours.

Who this is for: couples building a day-of timeline for an Ontario wedding, and guests wondering how late the night will go.

What does a typical reception timeline look like?

A classic evening reception moves from cocktails to dinner to dancing. This sample assumes a 4:00 p.m. ceremony and an on-site reception.

TimeMomentLength
5:00 p.m.Cocktail hour and appetizers60 min
6:00 p.m.Guests seated, grand entrance15 min
6:15 p.m.Dinner service75 to 90 min
7:30 p.m.Speeches and toasts20 to 30 min

This is an illustrative timeline; your venue’s end time and bar licence hours set the real limit.

How long is cocktail hour?

Cocktail hour usually lasts 45 to 60 minutes. It covers the gap while the couple takes photos and the room is set for dinner.

Going beyond 75 minutes tends to make guests restless, especially if they are hungry. Plan about four to six appetizer pieces per guest for an hour.

How long does dinner take at a wedding?

Dinner usually takes 60 to 90 minutes. Plated service is often faster per course; buffets and family-style meals take a little longer for large groups.

Approximate dinner time by service style (150 guests)

Plated, 3 courses~70 min
Buffet~85 min
Family style~80 min
Stations~90 min
Approximate, for planning purposes; timings depend on staff and room layout.
TipSchedule speeches between courses, not after dessert. Guests listen better while seated and fed, and it keeps the dance floor from losing momentum later.

How long is the dancing part of a reception?

Most couples plan two to three hours of open dancing. Ontario weddings with a big family crowd, or cultural traditions such as family dance performances or a long circle dance, often go longer.

A DJ is usually booked for five to six hours to cover cocktails, dinner music and dancing. See how much a DJ costs in Ontario for hourly rates.

Should your reception be shorter or longer?

Match the length to your crowd and your schedule. A four-hour reception suits a small or daytime wedding; a six-hour or longer one suits large, dance-heavy weddings.

  • Shorter (3 to 4 hours): brunch or lunch receptions, intimate weddings, many young children attending.
  • Standard (5 hours): most evening weddings of 80 to 200 guests.
  • Longer (6+ hours): multicultural weddings, big families, or a ceremony and reception at the same venue.

Holding the ceremony and reception in one place removes travel time between venues. Our page on wedding receptions shows how that works.

What makes a reception run late?

Receptions usually run late because of photos and speeches, not dinner. A few habits keep the evening on schedule:

  • Cap the photo list. Family photos after the ceremony are the most common cause of a long cocktail hour; a written shot list helps.
  • Limit speakers. Three to four speeches is plenty, and each speaker should know their time limit in advance.
  • Hand the timeline to one person. A venue coordinator or DJ who keeps the run-of-show can nudge things along politely.
  • Seat guests before the entrance. A five-minute call before the grand entrance saves fifteen minutes of searching for seats.

Build ten to fifteen minutes of slack before dinner. Almost every wedding uses it.

Quick answers

Is a 4-hour wedding reception long enough?

Yes, for many weddings. Four hours covers a short cocktail hour, dinner, speeches and about 90 minutes of dancing.

What time do most wedding receptions end?

Most evening receptions in Ontario end between 11:00 p.m. and 1:00 a.m. The venue contract and liquor licence hours usually set the latest time.

How long is a wedding from ceremony to end?

A full wedding day, from ceremony to last dance, is usually about six to seven hours. The ceremony itself is often 20 to 40 minutes.

When should the couple leave the reception?

Many couples stay until the last dance and do a send-off. Leaving early is fine too, as long as you tell the venue and DJ in advance.

How long should speeches be at a reception?

Each speech should be about three to five minutes, and all speeches together should stay under 30 minutes.
