Chatham-Kent sits between two Great Lakes, so guests can fill a free morning with beaches, provincial parks and birding, then add some of Canada’s most important Underground Railroad history sites and a show or a meal in downtown Chatham.
- Lake Erie shoreline: Rondeau Provincial Park and Erieau.
- Black history: Buxton and the Josiah Henson Museum in Dresden.
- Day trip: Point Pelee National Park near Leamington.
Lakes, beaches and parks
Chatham-Kent has Lake Erie to the south and Lake St. Clair to the west, which means plenty of shoreline within a short drive.
- Rondeau Provincial Park. A long sandy point on Lake Erie near Morpeth, known for its beach, forest trails and excellent birdwatching.
- Erieau. A small lakeside community with a public beach, a pier and a relaxed summer-cottage feel.
- Wheatley Provincial Park. Quieter beaches and creeks on the Lake Erie shore, close to the Essex County line.
- Mitchell’s Bay. On Lake St. Clair, popular for fishing, sunsets and boating.
- The Thames River. Walking paths along the river through downtown Chatham make an easy morning stroll.
History and culture
Chatham-Kent played a significant role in the Underground Railroad, and its historic sites are worth a few hours of any visitor’s time.
- Buxton National Historic Site & Museum. In North Buxton, telling the story of the Elgin Settlement founded by freedom seekers in the 1800s.
- Josiah Henson Museum of African-Canadian History. In Dresden, formerly known as Uncle Tom’s Cabin Historic Site.
- Tecumseh Parkway. Markers near Thamesville commemorate the War of 1812 and the Shawnee leader Tecumseh.
- Chatham-Kent Museum and Thames Art Gallery. Local history and changing art exhibits in downtown Chatham.
- Wallaceburg & District Museum. Covers the town’s history, including its long glass-making tradition.
In and around Chatham
- The Capitol Theatre. A restored downtown theatre hosting concerts, comedy and touring shows.
- Local restaurants and cafés. Downtown Chatham, Blenheim and Wallaceburg all have independent spots worth trying.
- Farm stands and markets. This is one of Ontario’s richest farming regions, so seasonal produce is easy to find in summer and fall.
- Golf. There are several public courses across Chatham-Kent, handy for a pre-wedding round.
